Dearborn, MI - The Wolves dropped their first conference game of the season 6-5 in heartbreaking fashion to Butler University.
The first quarter would be a complete stalemate as neither team could generate much offense. The Bulldogs dominated possession time in the first but the Wolves defense held strong denying every opportunity. The first score of the game would come unassisted by Freshman midfielder Alex Fitzgerald (Clarkston, MI) at the eleven minute mark of the second quarter. The Bulldogs would answer back just three minutes later to tie the game at one apiece. Attackman Dane Haskin (Lincoln Park, MI) would give the Wolves a 2-1 halftime lead with a drive and finish from X at the three minute mark of the second quarter.
The Wolves would extend their lead to 3-1 at the start of the third quarter off a goal from midfielder Kevin LaHaie (Plymouth, MI). However, the Bulldogs would fight back eventually claiming a 4-3 lead at the eight minute mark of the fourth quarter. With just over two minutes of play left Dane Haskin would tie the game at 4-4. The Wolves had a chance to close the door on the Bulldogs as two costly penalties gave the Wolves a two man advantage with under two minutes of play remaining. The Wolves got plenty of shots during their extra man opportunity but failed to convert. With just under twenty seconds remaining in the game freshman Dylan Hatcher pushed the cage for a shot. The Bulldogs goalie was able to make a save and quickly pass the ball down field in a last ditch effort. Unfortunately for the Wolves, a Bulldogs attackman was able to gain possession and quickly feed a teammate on the crease who shot and scored with exactly one second remaining on the game clock.
The Wolves will look to regroup and get back on track in a pair of home and away games next weekend. The Wolves will take on John Carroll Friday, March 30st at 7:00pm at Groves High School (Birmingham, MI) and Aquinas College on Saturday, March 31st at 2:00pm at Aquinas.
